Jump starts

A jump gets a weak battery going again. If the battery or charging system is the real problem, we can tow the car to a shop instead.

We come to where your vehicle is — the street, a driveway, a parking lot or the highway shoulder — and take it where you choose.

EXIT · HOW IT WORKS

How it works for this job

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptoms

Clicking, slow crank or nothing at all — it helps us know what to expect.

  2. 2

    We connect and start

The driver connects to your battery and tries a start.

  3. 3

    Keep it running

Once it starts, drive for a while so the alternator can recharge the battery.

  4. 4

    Tow if it won't hold

If it won't start or dies again, we can tow it to your mechanic.

What to tell us when you call

  • Where the car is parked
  • What you hear when you turn the key
  • How old the battery is, if you know
  • Whether the hood can be reached (garage, tight spot)

Never jump a battery that's cracked, swollen or leaking. Tell us if you see that.

EXIT · FAQ

Jump starts: common questions

Rapid clicking and dim lights usually point to the battery. A single loud click with bright dash lights often points to the starter. A jump is a quick way to tell the difference.

Drive for at least half an hour, ideally on the highway, so the alternator can put charge back in. Short stop-and-go trips may not be enough.

When it's done in the right order with the right connections, a jump is routine. Problems come from reversed clamps or a damaged battery, which is why the driver checks first.

That usually means the battery won't hold a charge or the alternator isn't charging. Have it tested; if the car won't start, we can tow it to your mechanic.
